{"primaryDescription":"<h2>MPs&nbsp;investigate&nbsp;how&nbsp;Defra can support upland farming&nbsp;</h2>\r\n<p>The EFRA Committee will question experts and representatives of upland farmers and land managers to&nbsp;understand&nbsp;the support they need and&nbsp;the challenges they face&nbsp;from government policy.&nbsp;</p>\r\n<p>MPs&nbsp;will&nbsp;examine problems affecting the viability of upland farming, such as difficulties in accessing\u202Ffunding&nbsp;from&nbsp;environmental schemes&nbsp;and the impact of cuts to&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/guidance/delinked-payments-replacing-the-basic-payment-scheme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">direct&nbsp;payments</a>.</p>","secondaryDescription":"<p>The cross-party Committee&nbsp;will also look at&nbsp;land designations, such as National Park, National Landscape and Site of Special Scientific Interest, and&nbsp;consider whether the protections strike the right balance&nbsp;in&nbsp;supporting the environment&nbsp;without overly burdening farmers.&nbsp;</p>\r\n<p>The Committee has also consistently heard evidence of tension between land managers and&nbsp;Natural&nbsp;England.&nbsp;Witnesses may be asked for their views on the organisation&rsquo;s interventions on livestock numbers, consents&nbsp;for farming operations&nbsp;and&nbsp;its understanding of upland community life.&nbsp;</p>\r\n<p>There may also be questions on&nbsp;anecdotal&nbsp;evidence that tenant farmers and&nbsp;farmers on&nbsp;common land have been displaced by landowners&nbsp;changing their business models.&nbsp; &nbsp;</p>","parliamentTvUrl":null,"id":28114,"name":"Environment, Food and Rural Affairs","startDate":"2026-09-08T00:00:00","endDate":"2026-09-10T00:00:00","cancelledDate":null,"locationId":null,"location":"Cumbria","eventType":{"id":3,"name":"Visit","isVisit":true,"description":"Committees may be allowed to travel within the UK or internationally to take evidence or otherwise inform their work."},"eventSource":"CIS","committees":[{"contact":{"email":"efracom@parliament.uk","phone":null,"address":"Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee, House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA","contactDisclaimer":"We receive a significant number of emails each day.
