MPs to hear from climate and carbon experts on Heathrow expansion

The Transport Committee is set to hold the second oral evidence session in its inquiry looking into the Government’s blueprint for a third runway at Heathrow.

\r\n

Tuesday’s session will begin with a panel featuring representatives from three organisations whose work focuses on climate change and carbon emissions.

\r\n

Addressing MPs will be witnesses from campaigning NGO Aviation Environment Federation and climate solutions charity Possible. They will be joined by a witness from Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research which unites UK experts working to develop sustainable responses to climate change.

\r\n

A second panel feature will a trio of environmental experts from University of London, University of Leicester and University of York.

\r\n

The Committee is scrutinising the draft Heathrow Expansion National Policy Statement (HENPS) published by the Department for Transport in June 2026. 

\r\n

The witnesses are likely to be questioned on the likely impacts of Heathrow expansion and how robust the Government's assessments of these are. 

\r\n

They could be asked about the four tests on economic growth, climate change, air quality and noise that are specified in the draft HENPS, and the practicality of meeting these tests.
