The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will examine the government’s intervention in British Steel and what its nationalisation could mean
","secondaryDescription":"In April 2025, the UK Government passed emergency legislation in a single day (in the first Saturday sitting since the Falklands War in 1982) to prevent the closure of British Steel’s blast furnaces to prevent UK industries and jobs being put at risk. As of May 2026, the cost to the government of supporting British Steel had reached £484 million.
\r\nThe Steel Industry (Nationalisation) Bill could see British Steel taken into public ownership, should a public interest test be met. The PAC will examine the potential cost of this, and how effectively the government’s current intervention has been in providing value for taxpayers’ money.
\r\nWitnesses on the first panel will likely be questioned on the impact the government’s intervention has had on workers and the local community, as well as what nationalisation could mean for these groups. The government’s interactions with local councils and the unions representing steel workers could also be discussed.
\r\nIn the second half of the session, MPs are likely to examine how well the government had prepared for its intervention, and the lessons it has learned from the situation. The Committee may also discuss the potential timetable for nationalisation and may question what this situation could mean for the wider steel industry.
