{"primaryDescription":"<h2>MPs&nbsp;to&nbsp;put speed&nbsp;under the&nbsp;spotlight&nbsp;as they explore road safety</h2>\r\n<p>The Transport&nbsp;Committee&nbsp;will focus on speed as it continues its inquiry into the Government&rsquo;s road safety strategy.</p>","secondaryDescription":"<p>In the third evidence session,&nbsp;Members will question a five-strong expert panel&nbsp;which includes Transport for London&rsquo;s chief safety, health and environment officer&nbsp;and the former chair of the Welsh Government&rsquo;s 20mph Task Force Group.</p>\r\n<p>The road safety strategy&nbsp;sets targets of a 65 per cent reduction in people killed or seriously injured (KSI), and a 70 per cent reduction in child KSIs, by 2035.&nbsp;</p>\r\n<p>Local authorities and National Highways play the lead role in ensuring safe speed limits are set on England&rsquo;s roads, and&nbsp;the strategy&nbsp;commits to updating&nbsp;guidance on setting local speed limits.</p>\r\n<p>Wednesday&rsquo;s evidence session will see&nbsp;witnesses discuss whether&nbsp;the strategy&rsquo;s commitments on speed are sufficient to support its casualty reduction targets.&nbsp;</p>\r\n<p>Members&nbsp;will&nbsp;explore evidence around 20mph limits, including lessons from Wales and London,&nbsp;and witnesses could be pressed on whether England should follow Wales and move towards 20mph as the national default speed limit on roads.&nbsp;</p>\r\n<p>Elsewhere in the session, Members could pose&nbsp;questions about driver behaviour, public attitudes to speeding, and the role of education and technology.</p>\r\n<p>The session will also consider how speed policy should be managed across national and local government, including whether current arrangements give local authorities the right balance of responsibility,&nbsp;guidance&nbsp;and support.</p>","parliamentTvUrl":"https://parliamentlive.tv/event/index/601611ee-7aa1-470b-ac32-afa812642250","id":26099,"name":null,"startDate":"2026-07-15T09:15:00","endDate":"2026-07-15T12:00:00","cancelledDate":null,"locationId":9,"location":"Room 5, Palace of Westminster","eventType":{"id":6,"name":"Formal meeting (oral evidence session)","isVisit":false,"description":"Formal meetings may be held in private (for example to consider a draft report) or in public (for example to hear oral evidence), and require a minimum number of members to be present."},"eventSource":"CIS","committees":[{"contact":{"email":"transcom@parliament.uk","phone":null,"address":"Transport Committee, House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA","contactDisclaimer":"We receive a significant number of emails each day.
