{"primaryDescription":"<h2><strong>Transport&nbsp;Committee&nbsp;continues road safety inquiry with focus on infrastructure</strong></h2>\r\n<p>The Transport&nbsp;Committee&nbsp;will hear from a five-strong panel of expert witnesses as it continues its inquiry into the government&rsquo;s Road Safety Strategy.</p>","secondaryDescription":"<p>The second session in the inquiry will focus on the role of infrastructure in improving road safety, including&nbsp;the commitments made in the strategy.&nbsp;</p>\r\n<p>It is also set to cover&nbsp;wider policy issues relating to road design, rural roads, speed management,&nbsp;how road users interact with infrastructure&nbsp;and how infrastructure improvements&nbsp;could be&nbsp;delivered in practice.&nbsp;</p>\r\n<p>The Road Safety Strategy sets out targets including a 65% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured by 2035. At the &ldquo;heart&rdquo; of the strategy is the Safe System,&nbsp;an&nbsp;evidence-based approach to road safety designed in Sweden in in 1980s.</p>\r\n<p>Witnesses will be quizzed on the ambitions and targets of the Road Safety Strategy&nbsp;and whether there is enough investment behind it.</p>\r\n<p>They&nbsp;may&nbsp;be&nbsp;asked&nbsp;what&nbsp;the Safe System approach&nbsp;could look like here in practice and how Government should be guided by its implementation elsewhere.</p>\r\n<p>MPs&nbsp;could also explore the significance of road maintenance in reducing deaths and serious injuries,&nbsp;the distinct challenges of rural roads&nbsp;and whether the&nbsp;Government&rsquo;s&nbsp;strategy&nbsp;has adequate measures&nbsp;to deal with&nbsp;the risks that cyclists face.</p>","parliamentTvUrl":"https://parliamentlive.tv/event/index/f9f4cc2a-20f5-4074-a9fa-10430d2ae09f","id":26096,"name":null,"startDate":"2026-06-24T09:15:00","endDate":"2026-06-24T12:00:00","cancelledDate":null,"locationId":12,"location":"Room 16, Palace of Westminster","eventType":{"id":6,"name":"Formal meeting (oral evidence session)","isVisit":false,"description":"Formal meetings may be held in private (for example to consider a draft report) or in public (for example to hear oral evidence), and require a minimum number of members to be present."},"eventSource":"CIS","committees":[{"contact":{"email":"transcom@parliament.uk","phone":null,"address":"Transport Committee, House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA","contactDisclaimer":"We receive a significant number of emails each day.
